Which of These Five Bike Choices?
Question for theWrench
Bike forums haven’t helped at all. Just making stupid posts or ridiculing me; so I ask you.
So I am a Pro Am/Amateur level Sponsored MTB rider. In about 3 weeks time I’m going with a new bike. The Hyper HPR S Shocker is done for. It skips 2nd gear, goes right to 3rd….and I’m getting drag/lag from the crankshaft and grinding from the bottom bracket.
Plus, when I was following a female racer days ago at Rocky Knob MTB park, for a timed run, I kept up with her well until the Shocker and I came in hard on a turn across a wooden bridge, and soon as I cleared the bridge, the front wheel twists and goes out of line, stuck 40 degrees to the right until I fixed it. Which ruined my aggressive run. Anyway….to the point.
I am planning on doing Enduro, downhill gravity racing and drag racing. I am wondering which to get before my upcoming race Event. The easiest to get would be The Hyper Havoc FS and put aftermarket parts on it.
The other bikes I’m considering are the Santa Cruz Bronson, The Specialized Demo 8 or my sponsors bike, the Eminent Haste. Looking for something 26 inch, with 2.30 tires or wider. Test rode the Specialized Stumpjumper and got used to SRAM trigger shifters yesterday, but 29 inches is too tall for me to easily recover if I need to correct torque steer or mess up on a practice session or on racing line.
The largest I’ll go is 27.5. I know The Haste will run me $4,499 with the sponsorship discount, which I don’t have atm and can’t figure out how to finance on the site currently. So looking for suggestions. Also recently interested in the Giant Talon 3. Which makes it five bike choices now.
Which of These Five Bike Choices?
I’m going to start by saying “IF” you have rode a Hyper Shocker to your car from the door of the Walmart without issue and I’m reading this correctly. You sir are the smoothest and most amazing MTB Pro/AM I’ve ever had the chance to answer a question for. Your bike choices are all over the map.
Above is the Hyper Havoc. A $129 bike from Walmart. Upgrading this bike with aftermarket inner tubes and tires would be the only upgrade recommended for this bike. Anything more than that would… well lets just say you can western union me the money and I’ll invest it.
I feel like I’m being punk’d with this email. However in my gut something says just answer the question. Lets just talk about your race disciplines and the proper bikes in the list for them. I must also make the point that the only drag racing I’ve seen on a bicycle involved a burning log and good-hearted racing to the keg at the finish line or two hipsters in full on fixie sprint to a craft beer.
Downhill / Gravity Racing: Specialized Demo 8
Enduro: Specialized Stumpjumper , Santa Cruz Bronson , Eminent Haste
Drag Race: Giant Talon 3
All these bikes will come with a trigger shifters unless otherwise upgraded. Wheel size offered in 27.5” with tires 2.0-2.5 depending on manufacturers spec.
I will always say “support those that support you”. When you are sponsored by a LBS or a brand, you ride what the shop sells or the brand manufactures. I can’t make the decision for you and you finances. I can help you narrow down your choices.
You’ve basically told me you have skills and the interest in racing. To be competitive in these disciplines you really need a bike for each one. However if I had to pick from your five bike choices, I would point you in the enduro/all mountain style. You will have to give on the climbs but you’ll be able to reclaim time lost on the descents. The rest is up to you bud. Good luck on your new bike day and your race season.
Keep me posted,
