How Can I Do a Mountain Bike Conversion … 26 to 29?
Bacolod city, Negos Occidental, Philippines
I have a 26 inch wheel size mountain bike and I’m planning to convert it to 29’er. Is that possible? If yes, how can I do this conversion? What parts should I add or remove?
Mountain Bike Conversion

Converting a 26” MTB to a 29” MTB is not possible. You are looking at a complete bike replacement. If you would like to have the versatility of 2 in 1 bikes might I recommend you look at 650+ or 29/6 fat style bikes.
Doing a 650+ or 29/6 Mountain Bike Conversion
These bikes will have boost spacing which means the frame have 12mm x 148mm of spacing and the fork is 15mm x 110mm. Standard spacing is currently 135mm /100mm for quick release equipped bikes and 142mm/100 for thru axle bikes. The upgrade spacing gives more clearance (with 2.6″-3.0” 650b tires or standard 2”-2.35” 29” tires) in the same frame and fork without creating geometry issues with the different wheel sizes. Typically these bikes are sold with one size wheel and you can purchase the other size to complete your set.
Numbers Pertaining to Mountain Bike Conversions
Here are some actual numbers to compare and prove compatibility:
BSD = Bead Seat Diameter using a 2.30 tire or a 3.0 plus size tire
OD = Outside Diameter
Wheel size BSD OD
26” 559mm 677mm
27.5/650b 584mm 702mm
650+ 584mm 740mm
29’er 622mm 740mm
29+ 622mm 778mm
As you can see the chance of turning your 26” into a 29er is just not possible. Although the BSD is different from 650+ and 29er the OD of the tire is the same and that will always be what creates your clearance issues with your frame and fork.
Good luck and see you on the trails.
