Riding Starting at Santee Lakes
Thanks for the kind words about my site. I do put a lot of effort into my posts and hope they will help people do more mountain biking.
Chuck, as you can see from the map above I can guide you to all kinds of trails you can ride from Santee Lakes. I can get you to Poway and to a back portion of Ramona (and also the beach) using 99% dirt tracks. The biggest problem involves getting to the eastern end of Sycamore Canyon.
As you might have heard on the news several mountain bikers have had their bikes confiscated by the military for riding on government land. Riding up Sycamore Canyon involves passing over about a mile or their land. Sycamore Canyon was the the place where the majority of riders lost their bikes … mostly on weekends. Now I have biked up Sycamore Canyon hundreds of times (mostly on weekdays) and have never encountered any military personnel.
The San Diego Mountain Biking Association has been negotiating with the military and our Executive Director (Susie Murphy) says we are close to having a deal. This is how she thinks it will work.
“Once people get their permits they can ride that section. [Getting a permit] will involve an online application followed by a visit to the base to get the physical permit. Not ideal. We know but it was the compromise that we could manage.”
Susie is not sure when the permits will be available. By the time you get here (April and May) the process might be all set up. If not, I guess you could take your chances (as you must have done the previous year) or start at the top of Cardiac Hill or the trailhead for Martha’s Grove.
So Chuck, send me an email before you arrive at Santee Lakes. If I am in town I would love to ride some of these trails with you. If not, please let me know how the riding went. By the way, most of the trails on my map have additional trails branching off and other trails adjacent to the ones I have shown.
One last thing Chuck. How about subscribing to my website. That way you will get an email every time I put up a new post. Having more subscribers can also help me when it comes to getting a sponsor.
Thanks for sharing your question,
