“You must be making a lot of money with all those ads,” One of my buddies (Ron) said to me. I had to laugh, for his statement just reinforced my beliefs about what little the general public understands about website advertising.
Four years ago I started out thinking like Ron, hoping I could offset some of my website expenses with the ads. I understood why, at first, the ads brought in little income … I had very few visitors (or pages upon which I could post ads). But as I added content to the site my visitor views jumped up as well as the number of pages containing ads (over 400 pages). Unfortunately, my income did not rise much at all. Let me give you an example to explain why I removed all the ads from my old website and post none here on this one.
For the past 4 years I had at least one advertisement (using Google Adsense) on every page of my old website … most the time posting three per page (Google’s limit).
Last August (2015) my readers visited 38, 658 pages of the old site. So, lets assume every visitor to those pages each looked at 2 ads. Then, by my calculations, 77,316 ads were viewed in just that one month. So, how much money did this advertising make me for that one month … less than $10. As a matter of fact, my record high income for any one month for the past 4 years was $23.67. Many months (during the winter) I took in less than $2.
My conclusion … people who visit websites like mine do not click on the ads (if an ad is not clicked, then Google pays no money) or they are just not in the shopping mood.
Another of my buddies (Steve) told me the ads on my site “looked tacky,” and I had to agree. I especially did not like seeing flashing ads for feminine hygiene or toilet cleaning products next to the photos, maps, and articles I had spent so much time trying to make appear classy.
So I removed all the ads.
I love my work and will continue to share my experiences as long as I can. However, a teacher’s retirement income does not go a long way when it comes to travel. If some affluent person or some large company would like to sponsor me I would certainly be interested, but I will never subject my visitors to those tacky ads again.
Please share with me any ideas you might have in this regard.
